The 2023 Dunedin Bird Show was a remarkable event, drawing considerable attention and participation, particularly from budgerigar enthusiasts. This surge in budgie entries was driven by the concurrent society show, which attracted top breeders and their finest birds. The vibrant display of budgies, with their vivid colors and charming personalities, captivated visitors and judges alike. In addition to the impressive turnout of budgerigars, the show also featured robust numbers of canaries and finches, each category showcasing a diverse range of breeds and colors. The well-organized event provided an excellent platform for breeders to exchange knowledge, share their passion, and celebrate the art of birdkeeping. The 2023 Dunedin Bird Show, with its extensive and varied entries, underscored the thriving avicultural community in the region and set a high standard for future shows.
The Christchurch Grand National Bird Show in 2022 was a resounding success, drawing nearly 1,500 entries from avid aviculturists and bird enthusiasts. Held in the vibrant city of Christchurch, the event showcased an impressive array of bird species, highlighting the beauty and diversity of avian life. Participants and visitors alike marveled at the meticulously groomed birds, ranging from colorful parrots to elegant canaries. The show provided a platform for breeders to display their finest birds and exchange knowledge, fostering a sense of community and passion for birdkeeping. The overwhelming number of entries underscored the event's prominence and the thriving interest in aviculture, making the 2022 show a memorable and celebrated occasion in the birdkeeping calendar.
Our second show at the Wingatui Hall was a huge success with a big show, heaps of prizes and was well attended by the public... It was great to see such large numbers through the front doors and lots of sale bird sold. To all the committee and club members that all pitched in, a big thank you from
the Dunedin Bird Club! Of course this club isn't just about showing and we encorgae members who have never tried showing before that they sould!
Another large show with around 750 birds on display! We were also very lcuky to host the 2022 New Zealand budgerigar society patronage show, were we saw close to 300 budgerigar from all over New Zealand attend the show !
Our recent show at the Wingatui Hall was a huge success with great numbers, prizes and was well attended by the public... it was great to see such large numbers through the front doors and lots of sale bird sold. To all the committee and club members that all pitched in, a big thank you from

This was a great event for the club and we saw one of the largest turn out of birds for about 10years, so meaning birds and showing is still strong in the south!
August 1st - 3rd this year saw the running of the 2014 Grand National Bird Show, which switches between the North and South Island on altenating years. The Grand National is the major show of the yea,
and always has the largest turnout of breeders, as well as the biggest pool of prize money. Birds that have done well will usually do well at the Grand National (as one would expect), but not always, as
all judges are different and have their own take on the given standards for the category that they are evaluating. The show was a big success and well run, and well worth the visit. For our August meeting (13th),
we gave a run down on the show, with a selection of photos and videos presented on the show. Around 1200 birds were on display at the Gore Town & Country Hall, with accompanying booths from Topflite and East Road Pets.
The Grand National also hosts the AGM for the NZ Federation of Bird Clubs, the parent body for most of the bird clubs in NZ. If you were unable to attend the show, it would be well worth visiting one in future years when
it is in your area.
Below you will find a selection of images from the show. There were numerous awards in each category, and this case I have chosen to provide an overall selection of photos rather than just focusing just on the winners. Hopefully they
will provide something of a feel of the show itself. As always click on the image to bring up a larger version. If you are after better quality versions of the photos, or of other photos from the show feel free to contact the webmaster.
Over Queens Birthday Weekend, 2014, the Dunedin Bird Club held its 133rd Annual Bird Show. Setup took place over Thursday and Friday morning, and went smoothly due to ample help. Benching took place on Friday afternoon evening,
and again it all went smoothly thanks to ample help. As the saying goes, many hands make work light ^^. Saturday morning begat the time of Judging, with the 500 benched birds being compared and rated by the judges and their
stewards. The Show opened up at 1pm to the public, with almost all the judging complete, and in the first two hours the public surged through, snapping up half of the sale birds in that short time frame, and perusing the birds on
show, It quietened down after that and over Sunday, but the public turnout was good, and it was nice to see both new and familiar faces. Debenching started at midday Sunday, followed by the dismantling of the show stands. Sunday
wrapped up fairly quickly with all the help provided, and all in all it was quite a successful show. Everyone involved appeared to enjoy themselves, and we would like to thank all those that helped out and made the show successful
and run smoothly.
A note on the number of benched birds - the number of birds that we had was less than last year, but that is due in part to having the budgie patronage show as part of the dunedin show last year, which brought in a considerable number of
extra budgies. The number was about on par with the Timaru show, held two weeks earlier.
Below you will find a selection of images from the show. Unfortunately due to technical issues, we do not have photos of all the category winners. Click on the larger for a larger version.
On the Sunday 6th April 2014 the Dunedin Bird Club held its annual Young Bird Show at the Green Island Primary School Hall. Although it was earlier in the season than it has been in previous years (resulting
in some of sme breeders birds still being in molt) we still had a number of members attend and show some quality birds. It was good to see some new faces, both in club members and the visiting public, and
the show ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all who attended. We would like to thank the Green Island Primary School for the use of their hall for this event, as well as all members who held run this event and who attended.
We look forward to much success for all in the showing season ahead.

On the 18-19th May 2013 Dunedin Bird Club held its 132nd annual bird show in 'the dungeon bar' at Forbury Park Raceway. The show included the NZ Budgerigar Society Patronage Show, resulting in a high number of budgie entries, as well as really good prizes,
a walkthrough with the budgies judges, who came from all over New Zealand, as to why the selected birds won their awards, and an auction being held on the saturday afternoon for quality budgies. Plenty of birds of many varieties were available for sale
(and sold), and given the weather over the weekend the public turnout was good. The show was enjoyed by all and went smoothly, from setup and benching to the final debenching and tidy up. Some fresh faces were able to have the chance to steward, and hence
improve their knowledge of the hobby, and it was good to see some new novice exhibitors as well as a number of junior exhibitors. The Gloster Society members present commented that the quality of glosters at the show this year was really high, which is a positive reflection
on the breeders of that variety of canary, and we hope to continue seeing such standards in the years to come, not just in glosters but in all breeds of cage and aviary birds. Some new members were signed up at the show (new members is always a good thing), and the show received good local
PR, with it featuring on the local channel (channel 39, direct link), and with photos in the ODT over a couple of days.
Of the 766 birds registered for the show 685 were benched. The break down of the 26 categories is as follows:
The Dunedin bird club wishes to thank all involved, and look forward to a successful show next year.

On the 4th - 5th May Timaru Bird Club held its 70th annual bird show, at the Waimataitai School hall, the second year that they have held their show there. The hall made for a
good venue, being in a adequate location, with good lighting and plenty of room. The show had a total of 588 birds entered over 22 categories, and those from the Dunedin Club exhibiting at the
show had decent success. It was also the first annual show for this year.
For the 588 birds registered to be shown (the number will be less once the not benched birds are taken off the totals) they can be broken down into the following categories:
Following is a selection of photos taken at the show, including all (assuming that I didn't miss any) of the ribbon winners, broken up into categories. Clicking on an image will bring up a larger version.
Some birds got multiple ribbons - only the title of one will be listed, with the total number of ribbons listed in ()'s beside that title.
The Young bird show was held on April 14th, at the Green Island School Hall. A friendly affair, it was a chance for members of the bird club to
bring along their young birds to be shown against others from the club and get exposure to being in a show before the annual show in May. Turnout was good, with 137 birds
being shown, filling up all the show benches that were setup and requiring the use of additional tables. All things considered the show was a success, and we would
like to thank all those who were involved and participated.
For the 137 birds shown they can be broken down into the following categories:
Unfortunately there were no participants in the Red Factor, British or Yorkshire categories although there were some reds for sale.
